Causality and chaos are the tools of contemporary EcoArtist SpaceKitty.NZ.
All physical abstract work has been created from reclaimed and recycled components that would have otherwise been landfill, meaning each canvas begins already possessing an individually. Foraged chemicals are then blended to an undisciplined jumbled of consistency and colour that is haphazardly layered with upcycled applicators and self-discovered technique.
By working with the flow of causality and embracing discovery over influence art by SpaceKitty.NZ is truly unique.
Spray (Jan 2021 - Mar 2021)
It all began with clothing dye in upcycled spray bottles and a canvas of discarded muslin cloth, stretched across the exposed metal grid of a vertically standing double bed-base. As the first collection “Spray” involved the steepest learning curve regarding temperature, consistency, and saturation, as both chemical decisions and application methods develop throughout the series.
Spin – Splatter – Scrape (Oct 2021 - Jan 2021)
Exploring the techniques of action painting, a style in which paint is improvisationally dropped or smeared onto the canvas, the “Spin”, “Splatter” and “Scape” collections work with mixed media and motion by rotating the canvas during application to develop vivid artwork more susceptible to chaos, while seeking ways to minimise the wastage associated with application and cleanup.
Folds (Oct 2022-Nov 2022)
Influenced by Rorschach’s inkblots, “Folds” explores the behaviour of paint and chemical on canvas when pressure is applied. With each piece created from upcycled blind fabric and causality sourced chemical compounds, the spontaneous vibrant artwork in the “Folds” collection were produced with almost zero wastage during application and cleanup.
Tremors (Aug 2023)
As the only collection created in 2023, “Tremors” explores live shadowing within the artwork by including the use of power tools to carve heavyset texture in upcycled wood and fibreboard panels.
